Join Gianna Purcell for five days of dedicated study and practice of the Classical Advanced 84 Asana Series. Whether you’re brand new to the advanced series or have practiced the 84 asanas for years, this intensive is designed to help you build confidence, refine your technique, and explore the purpose behind each posture in a supportive and encouraging environment.
ADVANCED 84 ASANA INTENSIVE WEEK
Each morning begins with a posture breakdown and preparation workshop (8:30am-10am), where we’ll focus on alignment, drills, mobility, strength, and the foundational actions needed to approach the postures safely and intelligently. We’ll explore the major posture groupings, discuss common challenges, and learn practical ways to prepare the body for more advanced movements. Each morning workshop will be followed by a full Classical 84 Asana practice (10:30am-12:30pm), giving you the opportunity to immediately apply what you’ve learned.
Throughout the week, we’ll dive into the nuances of the series, revisit the intention behind each posture, and cultivate patience, curiosity, and a sense of humor as we work together. The goal isn’t to “master” every pose — it’s to develop a deeper understanding of the practice and create a sustainable path for continued growth.
The Classical 84 Asana Series was shared with us by Bikram Choudhury and Emmy Cleaves. Bikram was trained by Shree Bishnu Charan Ghosh, founder of Ghosh’s College of Physical Education in Calcutta, India. Bishnu Ghosh trained at the Ranchi School for Boys, founded by his older brother, Paramahansa Yogananda, who created the Self-Realization Fellowship and wrote the book Autobiography of a Yogi.
The teachings also trace through Swami Sivananda Saraswati, whose philosophy continues to influence and infuse our daily asana and meditation practices. Sivananda’s teachings originate with Yogi Matsyendranath, said to be the first human teacher of Hatha Yoga. His chief disciple, Gorakhnath, was said to be the guru to Yogi Swatmarama, author of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. This text describes the purpose of hatha yoga as creating balance in activity, physical processes, mind, and energy to bring awakening that supports the evolution of human consciousness.
The Classical 84 Asana Series has long been an elusive practice for many practitioners. For many years, students gathered with Bikram and Emmy at advanced seminars to study the series. As the yoga community evolved, opportunities to learn the practice in its traditional form became increasingly rare. This intensive offers a chance to reconnect with that tradition through five consecutive days of focused study, thoughtful instruction, and dedicated practice.
